Office 2010 was preloaded on my computer

If Office 2010 was preloaded on your new computer you likely have:

Microsoft Office Starter 2010

Office Starter 2010 is a simplified, ad-funded version of Office that includes Excel Starter 2010 and Word Starter 2010. If you decide to continue using Office Starter 2010 no additional action is required as you do not have to have a product key to install or activate this version of Office.

Check whether another version was packaged with the computer:

The original equipment manufacturer may have also included a separate Office 2010 product key for Office Home and Student 2010, Office Home and Business 2010 or Office Professional 2010 instead of or in addition to Office Starter 2010. If this is the case, the product key can be found:

On a certificate of authenticity (COA) included with an Office installation disc and bundled with the computer packaging

On a certificate of authenticity (COA) affixed to a Microsoft Product Identifier (MPI) card bundled with the computer packaging

On a Product Key Card (PKC) bundled with the computer packaging

What is a Certificate of Authenticity?

The Certificate of Authenticity (COA) is a special security label that accompanies legally licensed Microsoft software to help prevent counterfeiting. A Certificate of Authenticity should always accompany the product with which it is associated. For more information, click here.

You are done. But if you have problems entering the product key or you receive an error when entering your product key, click the options below.

If you selected "Microsoft Office 2010" from the Start menu

On some computers, you may see an icon for Microsoft Office 2010 displayed in the Windows Start menu (see Figure 1). This program provides users the option to unlock Office Starter 2010, to go online and purchase a full retail copy of Office 2010, or to activate certain editions of Office 2010 (see Figure 2).

Figure 1: Location of the Microsoft Office 2010 option in the startup menu.

Figure 2: Window providing Activate, Purchase, and Use Office Starter 2010 options.

OfficeStarter2010_options

If you selected the above program and received a validation error, here's some good news! You do NOT need to run this program if you have already successfully installed and activated any of these products:

  • An older version of Office such as Office 2007
  • A volume license edition of Office 2010, such as:
      • Office Standard 2010
      • Office Professional Plus 2010

In fact, there should be another Microsoft Office entry further down the All Programs list for the Office version you installed. For example, in Figure 3, there are three Office options in the list. The second option is the one that would contain the full Office installation:

Figure 3: All Programs list containing various Office options.

Location_MicrosoftOffice2010_123

If the only entry in the list is Microsoft Office 2010 or Microsoft Office Starter (English), check your installed programs in Windows to verify if you have installed your full copy of Office on the computer. If you cannot find it, please make sure to install it and enter the product key during the process.

After you ensure your programs are present and work properly, you should remove the Microsoft Office 2010 option from the Windows Start menu by follow the steps below.

IMPORTANT Only uninstall the program if you have verified that your copy of Office is installed and functional!

  1. Click Start.
  2. Click All Programs, and then open the Accessories folder (Windows XP users can skip this step).
  3. Click Run, and then click in the Open box.
  4. Type appwiz.cpl, and then click OK.
  5. Locate the Microsoft Office 2010 line in the list of currently installed programs. (see Figure 3)
  6. Click Uninstall (or Remove for Windows XP users). (see Figure 4)

Your product key has been lost, stolen, or misplaced

Microsoft Customer Service can sometimes help to obtain a new product key but only if you have your Office 2010 installation disc. The disc can be validated and acts like a proof of purchase for the Microsoft Customer Service Representative. However, if both the product key and the disc are lost, there is very little Microsoft Customer Service can do to help. Based on your selection, this seems to be the case.

While we understand this can be frustrating, please note that this is similar to other company or store policies when you lose your proof of purchase for their products.

If I cannot get a new or replacement product key, what are my options?

The only option to install Microsoft Office 2010 is to purchase a new product. If you would like to see your purchase options click Buy Office.

How do I avoid this from happening in the future?

We recommend you consider purchasing a downloadable version of Office from the Microsoft Store. This would eliminate scenarios where the physical product key and packaging are lost as it will allow you to store your product key under a Windows Live ID account that can be retrieved online.

You are still unable to find your product key

If the information provided did not help, you may have selected the incorrect method in how you obtained Microsoft Office 2010. If you would like to start again and select a different method, click the "Start again" option at the end of the page.

If you are sure this is how you obtained Office 2010 and it seems like you will need a replacement product key, click the "How do I replace my product key?" option at the end of the page to explore your options.

If you believe the product key has been lost, stolen, or misplaced and you simply would like to purchase a new copy of Office 2010, you can click Buy Office to see your purchase options:

I lost or did not receive a confirmation email

If you do not receive a confirmation email, please check your spam, bulk, or junk mail folders. If you find the email there, your Internet service provider or software spam-blocker or filters are diverting the confirmation email.

You may also have multiple email accounts. If this is the case, we recommend that you check mail for the email account that you provided when you purchased Office 2010 online.

Retrieving your product key

You can retrieve the content of the confirmation email by using the Order History link on the store where you made the purchase from.

Once you have logged in with the correct Windows Live ID account, the product key will be located in the Account page in the DOWNLOADS + PRODUCT KEYS section.

Once you have logged in with the correct Windows Live ID account, the product key will be located in the My Account page in the Purchases section under the Product Key column.

Multiple installations of Office cause a conflict

Having one or more copies of Office installed on your computer could cause a conflict during the product key validation process. To check for other installations, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start.
  2. (Windows 7 and Vista users only) Click All Programs, and then open the Accessories folder.
  3. Click Run, type control appwiz.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK.

Scan the list for a Microsoft Office system that should not be on the computer. If you find an entry that you would like to uninstall, select it from the list, and then click Uninstall or Remove depending on your operating system.

Warning Before you uninstall a previous version of Office, please check to make sure you have the installation media for it.

You can also use one of the following easy fixes to automatically uninstall Office from your computer. Just download the fix, then click Run. We recommend you use easy fix only if you have problems manually uninstalling the Office suite.

Warning Each easy fix will uninstall ALL Microsoft Office suites for that version. For example, if you run the easy fix for Office 2010, it will uninstall all versions of Office 2010 on the computer.

The product key for another product is entered

Please remember to check the product title on the installation media and compare it against the product title on the packaging with the product key. If the product title does not match, you are entering the wrong product key.

Here are some common examples that could lead you to use the wrong product key:

You use the product key from the sticker on the computer

The sticker attached to a computer is known as a Certificate of Authenticity (COA). The COA contains a 25-character product key and features the product name printed on the label. If you are using the product key from a COA, verify the product name on the label matches the product you are trying to install.

TIP The COA most likely contains a Windows operating system product key that cannot be used for an Office 2010 installation.

You use the product key provided by a company or school

A product key provided directly from a company or school is most likely a volume license key. A volume license key can only be used for these two editions of Microsoft Office 2010:

  • Microsoft Office Standard 2010
  • Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010

If you try to use a volume license product key to install a retail edition of Microsoft Office 2010 such as Office Home and Student 2010, Office Home and Business 2010, or Office Professional 2010, it will fail.

Additionally, if you try to use a volume license product key to upgrade a preloaded edition of Office 2010 on your computer, also known as Office Starter, it will fail.

You use the product key from an Office 2010 program

Office 2010 programs, such as Outlook 2010, also use 25-character product keys. These product keys cannot be used to install or activate Office 2010 suites. If you have an Office 2010 program, verify that you are using the correct product key during your Office 2010 suite installation.

You use the product key from an older version of Office

Older versions of Office, such as Office 2007, also used 25-character product keys. These product keys cannot be used to install or activate Office 2010 products. If you have an older version of Office, verify that you are using the correct product key during your Office 2010 installation.

You use the product key for Office Web Apps Setup

Office 2010 downloads (Volume License) or physical media may reference or include stickers that contain product keys that begin with these characters: "FC7HF." These keys can only be used to install Office Web Apps Setup on SharePoint. Please visit the Office Web Apps Resource Center for additional information.

Did this solve your issue?

The product key is mistyped or entered incorrectly

When you read the product key from the label, certain characters may be mistaken for other characters. Here is a list of the most common mistaken characters:

  • The letter B and the number eight (8)
  • The letter Q and number zero (0)
  • The letter G and the number six (6)
  • The letters VV and the letter W

Additionally, a Microsoft Office 2010 product key does not contain any of the following characters:

  • Numbers (0, 1 and 5)
  • Letters (A, E, I, L, N, O, S, U, and Z)

If you try to enter one of these characters in the Product Key box it will not be accepted and a message will appear:

NotValid_Character

Check the numbers and letters on the product key to make sure that you are not typing an incorrect character and then try re-typing it.

TIP If you received the product key in a confirmation email try copying it from the email to avoid typing errors.

TIP You may also want to count the number of characters in the code you are using. Entering a code with less than 25 characters will not produce the message. However, the Continue button will not be active. Entering a code with more than 25 characters will produce the message. If the code you enter is under or over 25 characters in length, you are not using a product key. We recommend you use the "Where is my product key?" option at the end of this page to find your product key.

Select this option to find the location of your Microsoft Office 2010 product key.
