Error accessing automapped Exchange 2010 mailbox in Outlook 2010


In Microsoft Outlook 2010, connecting to an automapped Exchange 2010 mailbox with Full Access permissions, an authentication window is displayed when Outlook launches. And, you receive the following error when trying to access any automapped mailbox folders:

Cannot expand the folder. The set of folders cannot be opened. The attempt to log on to Microsoft Exchange has failed.


This behavior can occur if both of the following conditions apply:
  • The build of Microsoft Exchange 2010 is build 14.03.0181.006 or higher.

    Note, Update Rollup 5 for Exchange 2010 Service Pack 3 installs build 14.03.0181.006.

  • The build of Microsoft Outlook 2010 is less than 14.0.7015.1000.

    Note, Office 2010 Service Pack 2 installs build 14.0.7015.1000.


To resolve this issue, please update your Outlook installation with a build equal to or later than 14.0.7015.1000.

An Exchange administrator can use the following Powershell command to determine the current Exchange build (FileVersion):

gcm exsetup | fl

To determine the Outlook build, use the following steps:
  1. In Microsoft Outlook 2010, click the File tab and then click Help.
  2. Under About Microsoft Outlook, click Additional Version and Copyright Information
  3. The specific build information is listed in the About Microsoft Outlook dialog box, as shown in the figure below.
