Credentials request when you use the Research feature in Word


When you try to use the Research feature in Microsoft Word versions 2007 through 2013, you are asked to enter your security credentials.

If you already have the latest updates installed and still receive a credentials request when you use the Research feature, you may have a problem with an old registry key. In this case, you have to remove the old registry key.

Warning Serious problems might occur if you change the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or another method. These problems might require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be resolved. Change the registry at your own risk.
  1. Exit all Office programs.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Expand one of the following paths, depending on your version of Office:
    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\Research\Sources
    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Common\Research\Sources
    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\Research\Sources
  4. Click to select the following key:
  5. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
  6. When you are prompted to respond to one of the following messages, click Yes:

    • Are you sure you want to delete this key?
    • Are you sure you want to delete this key and all of its subkeys?
  7. Exit Registry Editor.
