Quick Parts menu entries are missing after you upgrade to Outlook 2013

After you upgrade to Microsoft Outlook 2013 from an earlier version of Outlook, you notice that your menu entries in the Quick Parts control are missing. This issue is shown in the following screen shot.

This issue occurs because a new NormalEmail.dotm template file is created when you first start Outlook after you upgrade to Outlook 2013. When this occurs, the existing NormalEmail.dotm file from the earlier version of Outlook is renamed as "NormalEmail15Pre.dotm." This is done to optimize the default template for Outlook 2013.

Note The NormalEmail.dotm file contains all Quick Part entries that you create.

Important Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Exit Outlook.
  2. Locate and open the following folder:

    C:\users\<user name>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates
  3. In this folder, rename NormalEmail.dotm to NormalEmail.old.
  4. Rename NormalEmail15Pre.dotm to NormalEmail.dotm.
  5. Start Registry Editor:
    • Windows 8: Press Windows logo key+R to open the Run dialog box. Type regedit.exe, and then press OK.
    • Windows 7: Click Start, type regedit.exe in the search box, and then press Enter.
  6. Locate the following subkey in the registry:

Note In this path, <x.0> represents your Office version (for example, version 15.0 = Outlook 2013).

  7. Under the \WordMail key, locate the FirstRunOnRTM value.

Note If the FirstRunOnRTM value does not exist, create it. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Select the WordMail key, right-click the details pane in the editor, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value.
    2. Change New Value #1 to FirstRunOnRTM.
  8. Right-click FirstRunOnRTM, and then click Modify.
  9. Make sure that the value in the Value data field is 0.
  10. Click OK.
  11. Close Registry Editor.
  12. Start Outlook.
