When a user tries to perform a Workplace Join to their local Active Directory site, they receive the following message:

Confirm you are using the current sign-in info, and that your workplace uses this feature. Also, the connection to your workplace might not be working right now. Please wait and try again.

Additionally, an administrator may see the following Event details in the Event Viewer.

Event ID:102
Log Name:Microsoft-Windows-Workplace Join/Admin
Source:Microsoft-Windows-Workplace Join
Description:Workplace Join discovery failed.

Exit Code: 0x80004005.

An unknown error has occurred. Could not connect to 'https://EnterpriseRegistration.domain.com:443/EnrollmentServer/contract?api-version=1.0'.

This problem occurs for one of the following reasons:
  • The 2012 R2 Active Directory Federation Server (AD FS) service is not running on the internal federation servers.
  • The Device Registration Service is not running.

To resolve this problem, restart the Device Registration Service and AD FS services if they are not running.

To check the service status, use Services.msc locally on the AD FS Server Nodes, or connect remotely from another computer. Locate and then verify the status of both the Device Registration Service and AD FS services. If the services are not running, you must start them.
