Out-of-office replies and voting options in email messages between on-premises users and Exchange Online users do not appear correctly in a hybrid deployment

Note The Hybrid Configuration wizard that's included in the Exchange Management Console in Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 is no longer supported. Therefore, you should no longer use the old Hybrid Configuration wizard. Instead, use the Office 365 Hybrid Configuration wizard that's available at http://aka.ms/HybridWizard. For more information, see Office 365 Hybrid Configuration wizard for Exchange 2010.

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a hybrid deployment of on-premises Microsoft Exchange Server and Exchange Online in Office 365.
  • The on-premises environment includes both Microsoft Exchange Server 2013-based servers and Microsoft Exchange Server 2010-based servers.
  • An Exchange Online user sends an email message to an on-premises user or an on-premises user sends an email message to an Exchange Online user.
In this scenario, the users experience the following symptoms:
  • Out-of-office MailTips and replies do not appear correctly.
  • Voting options in messages are missing or do not appear correctly.

This problem may occur if remote domain settings are missing or are set incorrectly.

To resolve this problem, update the remote domain settings in Office 365. To do this, do one or both of the following, as appropriate for your situation.

Scenario: Exchange Online users can't view out-of-office replies and voting options of on-premises users

  1. Connect to Exchange Online by using remote Windows PowerShell. For more information, see Connect to Exchange Online using remote PowerShell.
  2. Run the following commands, in which "contoso.com" is the primary SMTP address of your on-premises users. If you have multiple primary SMTP address spaces for users in your organization, repeat these steps for each domain.
    New-RemoteDomain "contoso.com" -DomainName "contoso.com"
    Set-RemoteDomain "contoso.com" -TNEFEnabled $true -AllowedOOFType "InternalLegacy"
  3. Test to verify that the problem is resolved.

Scenario: On-premises users can't view out-of-office replies and voting options of Exchange Online users

  1. On the on-premises server that is running Exchange Server, open Exchange Management Shell, and then run the following commands:
    Get-RemoteDomain | FL Name
Note There may be multiple domains listed in the output. Note the domain name that corresponds to the hybrid domain. It should resemble "Hybrid Domain - contoso.mail.onmicrosoft.com."
    Set-RemoteDomain "Hybrid Domain - contoso.mail.onmicrosoft.com" -AllowedOOFType "InternalLegacy" -TNEFEnabled $true
Note In this command, "Hybrid Domain - contoso.mail.onmicrosoft.com" represents the value that corresponds to the hybrid domain that you retrieved by running the first command.
  2. Test to verify that the problem is resolved.
