.NET Framework 4 language packs are not updated or removed after you upgrade to Windows 8

Symptoms

Assume that .NET Framework 4 language packs are installed in Windows 7. When you upgrade the operating system to Windows 8, the .NET Framework 4 language packs are neither removed nor replaced by the .NET Framework 4.5 language packs.

Note This issue occurs when a .NET Framework 4 language pack does not match the language that is being used in Windows 8. For example, assume that an English language edition of Windows 7 has the German language pack for the .NET Framework 4 installed. Then, you upgrade the Windows operating system to the English language edition of Windows 8. In this case, the German language pack files for the .NET Framework 4 remain untouched and are not updated to German language pack files for the .NET Framework 4.5.

However, this problem does not occur for the English language.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

Workaround

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods:
  • Install the appropriate Windows 8 language pack after you upgrade to Windows 8

Note Be aware that this is a Windows 8 language pack, not a .NET Framework language pack.
  • Uninstall the .NET Framework 4 language packs before you upgrade to Windows 8
