Error message when you try to install an earlier operating system in Windows Preinstallation Environment 2.0: "<Task Sequence Name> has failed with the error code (0x800004005)"

In Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE) 2.0, you try to install an earlier operating system, such as Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP. Then, you receive the following error message during the installation:
<Task Sequence Name> has failed with the error code (0x800004005).
For more information, please contact the system administrator or helpdesk operator.
This problem occurs if the system has two or more raw disks.

This problem also occurs when you try to deploy an earlier operating system by using Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) 2007.

Note SCCM 2007 also uses Windows PE 2.0.

This problem occurs because of a problem in Windows PE 2.0. This problem occurs when Windows PE 2.0 distinguishes between the raw disks for the system partition. If system has more than one raw disk, the function that is used to obtain system partition information returns false information.

A hotfix is available to resolve this problem. After you install this hotfix, follow these steps:
  1. To manually extract the files to a temp location, run the following commands:
    Expand -f:* Path\Windows6.0-KB945783-x86.msu Target Path
    Expand -f:* Path\ Target Path
  2. To mount the Winpe.wim file, run the Imagex.exe tool together with the following command:
IMAGEX.EXE /mountrw Path of the WinPE .WIM 1 Staging area
  3. Copy the updated Winload.exe file and the updated Winresume.exe file to the System32\boot directory of the mounted Winpe.wim file.

Note The x64 version of the hotfix has an additional file that is named Winload.efi. You must also copy the Winload.efi file to the System32\boot directory.
  4. Copy the updated Setbcdlocale.dll to the System32 directory of the mounted Winpe.wim file.
  5. To unmount the Winpe.wim file, use the Imagex.exe tool together with the /commit syntax to run the following command:
    IMAGEX.EXE /commit
Note If the Winpe.wim file is in an SCCM 2007 environment, you must update the distribution points.
