2007 Office file associations are removed when you remove the 2007 Office Compatibility Pack or when you remove 2007 Office Compatibility Pack Service Pack 1

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You upgrade to 2007 Microsoft Office from an Office legacy version.
  • You remove the 2007 Office Compatibility Pack, or you remove the 2007 Office Compatibility Pack Service Pack 1 (SP1).
In this scenario, 2007 Office file associations are also removed. For example, the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PowerPoint.Show.12\shell\Open\command registry subkey that points to PowerPoint.exe is removed when the 2007 Office Compatibility Pack is removed or when 2007 Office Compatibility Pack SP1 is removed.

Workaround

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods:
  • Run the repair process for 2007 Office.
  • Click Start, click Run, type Msiexec.exe /fm {2007 Office product GUID}, and then press ENTER.
  • Remove the 2007 Office Compatibility Pack or remove 2007 Office Compatibility Pack SP1 before you upgrade to 2007 Office.
