FIX: Error message when you install SQL Server 2008 Express edition on a domain controller that is running Windows Server 2003 SP2 or Windows Small Business Server 2003 SP1: "Exception has been thrown by the target of invocation"

Bug #: 50003393 (SQL Hotfix)BUG #: 50003393 (SQL Hotfix)

Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 fix release.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a domain controller that is running Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) or Windows Small Business Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1).
  • You install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express edition on the domain controller by using the SQL Server Installation Wizard.
In this scenario, you receive the following error message:
The following error has occurred: Exception has been thrown by the target of invocation. Click 'Retry' to retry the failed action, or click 'Cancel' to cancel this action and continue setup.
You may also receive this error message when you try to repair an instance of SQL Server 2008 Express edition. This behavior occurs if the SQL Server Agent service that is associated with the SQL instance is missing from the computer and must be re-created.
