ERROR: The workbook you opened contains automatic links to information in another workbook

Symptoms

Receive the following error when attempting to generate a report that is linked to an external Microsoft Excel worksheet: "The workbook you opened contains automatic links to information in another workbook. Do you want to update this workbook with changes made to the other workbook?"To update all linked information, click YESTo keep the existing information, click NOEither option of YES or NO does not resolve the error.

Cause

Settings within Microsoft Excel for linking worksheets are not setup properly.

Resolution

1. Open the Microsoft Excel Worksheet that the error is occurring in 2. Select Options from the Tools menu 3. Select the Edit Tab4. Clear the 'Ask to update automatic links' check box. If the box is cleared, the links are automatically updated, and no prompt is displayed. If the prompt is displayed after the following steps above do the following: 1. Open the Microsoft Excel Worksheet 2. Select Links from the Edit menu***Note: The Links command is unavailable if your file does not contain linked information*** 3. In the Source list, click the linked object you want to update. ***Note: An A in the Update column means the link is automatic, and a M in the Update column means the link is set to Manual update. 4. Verify if the linked worksheets are set to A (automatic) or M (manual) 5. Switch to the worksheet that contains the links 6. Select Options from the Tools menu 7. Select the Calculation tab 8. Clear the 'Update remote references' check box***Note: Clearing the check box overrides the Automatic option (for all links) in the Links dialog box (edit menu), but does not change the option to Manual.
