Introduction

When you prepare to migrate to stand-alone products, you can use the Migration Preparation Tool for Windows Essential Business Server (EBS) to remove the Windows EBS features from the computers that are running Windows EBS 2008 Standard or Windows EBS 2008 Premium. After you run the Migration Preparation Tool on each Windows EBS computer, the Migration Preparation Tool removes all the Windows EBS features such as Remote Web Workplace and the Windows EBS Administration Console. However, the individual server applications are not removed. For example, these server applications include Exchange Server 2007, System Center Essentials, and Forefront Threat Management Gateway.If you plan to migrate from the Windows EBS platform or decommission any of your computers that are running Windows EBS, we recommend that you use the Migration Preparation Tool.Note If you want to migrate from Windows EBS, all computers that are running Windows EBS must be migrated.

Introduction to the Migration Preparation Tool

When you run the Migration Preparation Tool for Windows EBS on each computer that is running Windows EBS, the following features are removed.

The Management Server

Windows EBS Management pack

The Migration Preparation Tool removes the Windows Essential Business Server management pack that has the Microsoft.Windows.EssentialBusinessServer ID. This management pack provides rules to monitor the functionality of the Windows EBS Management Server, Security Server, and Messaging Server.

Policies for Windows Error Reporting (WER) and Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP)

With Windows Error Reporting (WER), you can track and address Windows EBS errors. If you choose to participate, the Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP) collects usage and reliability data about Windows EBS to send to Microsoft. After you run the Migration Preparation Tool, you can change the WER and CEIP settings for each application or operating system individually.

Configuration store

The configuration store is a partition in Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) that stores Windows EBS environment settings that support rapid server recovery and replacement.

Windows EBS remoting from IIS

With this feature, a computer that is running Windows EBS can run tasks on another computer that has Internet Information Services (IIS) installed.

Windows EBS software

The Migration Preparation Tool removes the following: · Windows EBS Administration Console.· Windows EBS tools such as the Change IP Address Settings tool.· The security slider for Forefront Threat Management Gateway. If Windows EBS Feature Pack 1 is installed,the security slider for Forefront Threat Management Gateway is removed.· Windows EBS Help.

Desktop background

The Windows EBS background is replaced by the default Windows Server 2008 standard background.

Checks for EBS license compliance

The Migration Preparation Tool removes the License Check Service that verifies the license compliance for Windows EBS.

How to use the Migration Preparation Tool

To use the Migration Preparation Tool, follow these steps.

  1. Download the Migration Preparation Tool and documents to your computer.Note In the "Hotfix download available" section that is at the top of this Knowledge Base article, click View and request hotfix downloads to find the Migration Preparation Tool and documents.Important

    • If you use the Migration Preparation Tool for Windows Essential Business Server 2008, you must agree to the End User License Agreement. The End User License Agreement is included in this hotfix package and has the following file name:

      Migration Toolkit for EBS 2008 SUPP NOTICE.rtf

    • This hotfix is apply to Windows Essential Business Server 2008 Management Server. However, only "Small Business Server 2008" is listed on the Hotfix Request page. To request the hotfix package that applies to Windows Essential Business Server 2008 Management Server, select the hotfix that is listed under "Small Business Server 2008" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.

    In this scenario, the paged pool memory usage may keep increasing.

  2. Read the Migration Preparation Tool document before you run the tool.Caution The Migration Preparation Tool makes permanent and irreversible changes to your computers that are running Windows EBS.

  3. Create and test backups of each computer that is running Windows EBS before you run the Migration Preparation Tool.

  4. Follow the instructions that are in the Migration Preparation Tool document, and run the Migration Preparation Tool on each computer that is running Windows EBS in the following order:

    1. Management Server

    2. Mail Server

    3. Security Server

Note After you run the Migration Preparation Tool, the customized edition of Windows Server 2008 for Windows EBS remains on the computer. However, this edition cannot be upgraded to a newer version of Windows Server such as Windows Server 2008 R2. Additionally, upgrades for the EBS feature applications are not supported. Therefore, plan to fully transition the computers that are running Windows EBS to Windows Server 2008 Standard.

Migration Preparation Tool Troubleshooting

If any Windows EBS features are not removed by the Migration Preparation Tool, rerun the tool. If the feature cannot be removed after multiple tries, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support. For Migration Preparation Tool troubleshooting, use the data that is stored in the EBSMigrationTool.log file. This file is located in the directory from which you run the Migration Preparation Tool.
