User files are available offline when SMB shares don't allow client caching in Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2

Symptoms

This issue occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • You have a network-attached storage device that supports Server Message Block (SMB) protocol version 2.1 and contains a shared folder.
  • You connect to the NAS shared folder by using a Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path, such as \\ServerName\ShareFolder, and you access a file from a computer that's running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • You have disabled the offline files feature on the share and cleared Always offline available in Sync Center.

If the network-attached storage device is turned off, you don't receive error messages when you try to access files on the share. Files that you previously accessed are pinned offline, and are available through client-side caching in Sync Center.

Resolution

To fix this issue, we have released a hotfix for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2.
