Symptoms
Consider the following scenario:
-
You have a computer that is running Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0 or IIS 7.5.
-
You apply hotfix 980368 or a later version of the hotfix that updates the Iiscore.dll file. The hotfix enables certain IIS 7.0 or IIS 7.5 handlers to handle requests of extensionless URLs.
-
You run an application that handles some requests for the extensionless URLs.
For example, you run an application that handles some requests for one of the following URLs:-
http://www.example.com/ExampleSite/ExampleFile
-
http://www.example.com/ExampleSite/ExampleFile.
-
In this scenario, the W3wp.exe process may crash intermittently. Additionally, you may receive the following error message:
Faulting application w3wp.exe, version 7.0.6002.18005, time stamp 0x49e023cf, faulting module iiscore.dll, version 7.0.6002.22388, time stamp 0x4bcf4110, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x000113dc, process id 0x18a4, application start time 0x01cbb6d588864020.
Resolution
Hotfix information
A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

Restart requirement
You must restart the computer if IIS is running when you apply this update.
