FIX: You cannot remove a ClickOnce application after you enable the "Remove pinned programs list from the Start menu" setting

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You deploy a ClickOnce application on a computer.
  • You enabled the Remove pinned programs list from the Start menu Group Policy setting in the Local Group Policy Editor.

In this scenario, you cannot remove the ClickOnce application in Add or Remove Programs.

Cause

This issue occurs because the System.Deployment.Application.ShellExposure.UnpinShortcut method encounters an exception.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must have the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 feature installed on a computer that is running one of the following operating systems:
  • Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
Note The .NET Framework 3.5.1 feature contains the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 (SP2).

Or, you must have the Microsoft .NET Framework 4 installed on a computer that is running one of the following operating systems:
  • Windows Server 2003
  • Windows XP
  • Windows Vista
  • Windows Server 2008
  • Windows 7
  • Windows Server 2008 R2
Note The hotfix for the .NET Framework 4 is compatible with all existing service packs for the supported operating systems.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

We recommend that you exit all applications that use the .NET Framework before you install this hotfix.

Workaround

To work around this issue, disable the Remove pinned programs list from the Start menu Group Policy setting in the Local Group Policy Editor. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Open the Local Group Policy Editor or the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in.

    For more information about how to open the Local Group Policy Editor, visit the following Microsoft website:
  2. Locate and then double-click the following node:
    User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Start Menu and Taskbar node
  3. Double-click the Remove pinned programs list from the Start Menu Group Policy setting, click Disable, and then click OK.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
