This article describes the supported method to reduce the size of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 setup media. You can install SQL Server 2008 R2 Evaluation from a shared network in order to obtain a small setup media, and then you can use the method in the “More information” section to upgrade to another SQL Server edition. To reduce SQL Server 2008 R2 setup media size, follow the supported method:

Note We do not support alternative methods that can reduce the SQL Server 2008 R2 setup media size, other than the following method. Other alternatives will result in SQL Server 2008 R2 setup media that has not been tested. Uses of alternative media are not supported. A limited testing of alternative SQL Server 2008 R2 media may be displayed to result in a successful SQL Server 2008 R2 setup, but later updates such as service packs, cumulative updates or fixes may not successfully install. A later update failure may require you to follow untested and undocumented steps in an attempt to uninstall the update or uninstall the original setup. A use of alternative or untested media can cause those uninstall tries to fail.

Select one of the CPU architectures of SQL Server 2008 R2 Evaluation to download and setup

You can select one of three CPU architectures supported by SQL Server 2008 R2 Evaluation to download and setup. The SQL Server 2008 R2 Evaluation setup media is distributed by the following CPU architectures:
  • IA-64
  • x64
  • x86

When you set up the downloaded SQL Server 2008 R2 Evaluation, you provide a valid product ID (PID). In this situation, the SQL Server Setup program can change the Evaluation edition to an edition of SQL Server 2008 R2 supported by the valid PID.
