Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You create an accepted domain in a Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 environment.

  • You use a wildcard character (*) in the Accepted Domain field to accept messages for both a domain, and for a remote trusted domain.

  • You try to view the calendar information or the free/busy information about a user who is in a different domain.

In this scenario, the MSExchangeAutodiscoverAppPool application pool crashes on the Exchange Server 2010 Client Access server. Additionally, the following events are logged in the Application log:

Cause

This issue occurs because the domain cache does not support an accepted domain that contains a wildcard character. When the Exchange Server 2010 Client Access server processes a request for an accepted domain that contains a wildcard character, an exception is thrown.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, install the following update rollup:

2685289 Description of Update Rollup 3 for Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 2

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
