In Microsoft Edge , you can import almost all of your data from Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox and use it in Microsoft Edge to minimize the setup required for switching over and to continue working in ways that are familiar to you with the other browsers. You can also import your passwords from 3rd Party Password Managers to further simplify setting up Microsoft Edge.

This article shows what to expect from the options you have when you import browser data and passwords to Microsoft Edge.

How to import data from other browsers to Microsoft Edge

When you first run Microsoft Edge, you have the option of importing browser data from any other browser you use. When you install another browser on your new device, Microsoft Edge will start importing essential browser data like passwords, history, autofill and more. Microsoft Edge uses internet data usages to detect the primary browser. The browser whose internet data usage is at 50% or higher is set as the primary browser. Otherwise, it assumes legacy Microsoft Edge to be the primary browser.

To view your internet data usage:

  • In Windows, go to Start  > Settings  > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Data Usage.

When Microsoft Edge determines the primary browser, it starts importing other browser data types like favorites, extensions, open tabs and more.

Note: Other than legacy Microsoft Edge, the browsers that Microsoft Edge will import are Microsoft Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox.

You can manually import data at other times than when you first run Microsoft Edge.

  1. In Microsoft Edge, go to Settings and more   > Settings   > Profiles Import browser data.

  2. Under the Import from other browsers section, select Choose what to import.

  3. Under Import from, select the browser whose data you want to import.

  4. Under Choose what to import, select the specific browser data you want imported from the list.

  5. Select Import.

What's the consent policy for data migration on Edge Browser?

When you first run Microsoft Edge, it imports data from legacy Microsoft Edge and presents you with an option to import your data from your primary browser.

The chromium-based Microsoft edge is an upgrade from the old, legacy Microsoft Edge. We automatically bring over all your data from the legacy Microsoft Edge when you start using the chromium-based Microsoft Edge.

  • Microsoft Edge does not ask for any explicit consent to migrate data from legacy Microsoft Edge.

  • The legacy Microsoft Edge data is always migrated to the new Microsoft Edge.

If Google Chrome is detected as your primary browser, Microsoft Edge presents you with the option to import data from Google Chrome so that you give explicit consent to this data being imported.

When you select Get Started, favorites, history, and shortcuts are brought over from Google Chrome. These are used only to visually show the placement of favorites and top sites on the New tab page. The favorites, history, and shortcut data is fetched and shown, but not saved until this point. You'll be presented with two options for what to do with browser data from Google Chrome:

  • If you choose Import from Google Chrome, all data, including favorites, history, and shortcuts, is saved in the Microsoft Edge User Data folder.

  • If you choose Continue without importing, the favorites, history, and shortcuts data is discarded and no other data is imported from Google Chrome.

What’s imported from Internet Explorer?

You can import almost all of your data from Internet Explorer and set it up to look, behave, and function in Microsoft Edge as it did in Internet Explorer.

To review the data types you can import from Internet Explorer:

  1. In Microsoft Edge, go to Settings and more   > Settings   > Profiles Import browser data.

  2. Under the Import from other browsers section, select Choose what to import and then choose Microsoft Internet Explorer from the list under Import from.

  3. Under Choose what to import you'll different types of browser data you can select. The following shows what’s imported from Internet Explorer when you select any of these datatypes in the Import dialog.

Select this option to import the bookmarks in your Favorites bar in Internet Explorer, to the Favorites bar in Microsoft Edge. Other favorites will be imported to the Other favorites folder in Microsoft Edge.

During import,

When Microsoft Edge imports your passwords, it checks to see if you already have a password for the same website and username. If the saved password and the imported password don't match, Microsoft Edge overwrites the existing password with the one being imported. For websites where there are no conflicts, the existing saved passwords in Microsoft Edge will be unaffected.

To see your passwords saved in Internet Explorer, go to Tools Internet Options > Content tabAutocomplete settings > Manage Passwords
