Summary

This article describes the features and fixes that are included for Microsoft Azure Backup Server (MABS) V4. It also contains the download link for MABS V4.

Features and improvements

The following features are included in this update for Azure Backup Server v4. Learn more about the new features and enhancements here.

Windows Server 2022 support

MABS V4 can be installed on and protect Windows Server 2022. To use MABS V4 with WS2022, you can either upgrade your OS to WS2022 before installing/upgrading to MABS V4 or you can upgrade your OS after installing/upgrading V4 on WS2019.

MABS V4 is a full release, and can be installed directly on Windows Server 2022, Windows Server 2019, or can be upgraded from MABS V3. Before you upgrade to or install Backup Server V4, read about the installation prerequisites.

SQL Server 2022 support

MABS V4 can be installed with SQL 2022 as the MABS database. You can upgrade the SQL server from SQL 2017 to SQL 2022 or install it anew. You can also back up SQL 2022 workload with MABS V4.

Private Endpoint Support

With MABS V4, you can use private endpoints to send your online backups to Azure Backup Recovery Services Vault.

Azure Stack HCI 22H2 support

MABS V4 now supports protection of workloads running in Azure Stack HCI V1 till 22H2.

VMware 8.0 support

MABS V4 can now backup VMware VMs running on VMware 8.0. VMware 6.5 till 8.0 will be supported by MABS V4.

Note: MABS V4 does not support the DataSets feature added in vSphere 8.0.

Parallel Restore of VMware and Hyper-V VMs

MABS V4 supports parallel restore of VMware and Hyper-V virtual machines. With earlier versions of MABS, restore of VMware VM and Hyper-V virtual machine was restricted to only one restore job at a time. With MABS V4, by default you can restore 8 VMs in parallel and this number can be increased using a registry key.

Item level recovery from online recovery points for Hyper-V and Stack HCI VMs running Windows Server

With MABS V4, you can perform item level recovery of files and folders from your online recovery point for VMs running Windows Server on Hyper-V or Stack HCI without downloading the entire recovery point. Go to the “Recovery” pane, select an VM online recovery point and double click on the recoverable item to browse and recover its contents at a file/folder level.

Parallel online backup jobs - limit enhancement

MABS V4 supports increasing the maximum parallel online backup jobs from 8 to a configurable limit based on your hardware and network limitations through a registry key for faster online backups.

Faster Online Backups

MABS V4 moves away from File Catalog for online backup of file/folder workloads. File Catalog was necessary to restore individual files and folders from online recovery points, but increased backup time by uploading file metadata. MABS V4 uses an iSCSI mount to provide faster individual file restores and reduces backup time since file metadata does not need to be uploaded.

Issues that are fixed

This update fixes the following issues:

  • Online Restore of VMWare Machine fails with InvalidRequestFault
VirtualEthernetCardNetworkBackingInfo when NIC does not exist on the restore location.

  • MABS V4 supports TLS 1.2 (port 587) for SMTP reports and alerts now.

  • Backups fail with 40002 error forcing restart of MABS server.

  • MABS V4 can now work seamlessly in a mixed IP environment without using the PingBeforeConnect registry key.

  • Enhancements in RCT Tracking for Hyper-V.

  • Recovering a VMware disk which has a disk excluded recovers the excluded disk as an empty disk.

  • Error message missing when installing MABS on a domain controller.

  • Item level recovery of large datasource fails due to iSCSI timeout.

  • Backups fail since MABS volumes are erroneously marked as missing due to failed WMI calls.

  • Restoring clustered Hyper-V VM moves configuration file, preventing start of restored VM.

  • Online backup jobs are stuck in pending state for many days.

  • Item level recovery of Hyper-V VM fails with internal error code 0x80990F4E due to timeout when mounting disk.

  • Volume to Volume migration fails with 40003SMIOError - Source Directory not found.

  • Pre backup and post backup scripts are not triggered for Hyper-V VM backup.

  • MABS does not honour proxy settings during server registration.

  • MABS engine crashes when listing volumes for protection.

  • MABS does not detect RCT with VM configuration version 10.

  • Recovery of VMware VM with single disk and disk exclusion crashes MABS.

  • Recovery of Hyper-V VM fails when ISO is attached.

  • Recovering file data from online recovery point to original location marks it as inconsistent.

  • MABS creates additional snapshot on server after BMR backup.

  • MABS consumes additional storage by retaining avhdx files that are not required after backup.
