When you process DML operations on a table that has partitioning, and incremental statistics are automatically updated, an access violation occurs. Additionally, you receive the following error message in Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS):

Cannot continue the execution because the session is in the kill state.
Msg 0, Level 20, State 0, Line 79

Note If you disable automatic update statistics, this error doesn't occur.

Cumulative Update 8 for SQL Server 2017
Cumulative Update 1 for SQL Server 2016 Service Pack 2
Cumulative Update 9 for SQL Server 2016 Service Pack 1
