Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You start the Services for Network File System (NFS) on a server that is running Windows Server 2008 R2.

  • You share a folder on the NFS server.

  • You enable the KeepInheritance registry value to set inheritable access control entries (ACEs).

  • You create a child object on the NFS share from an NFS client. For example, you create a file or sub-folder on the NFS share.

In this scenario, the inheritable ACEs may not be propagated correctly to the child object. If a legitimate user tries to access the child object on a client, the user receives an “Access is denied” error message.

Note The issue does not occur in Windows Server 2008.

Cause

This issue occurs because of an issue in the Server for NFS kernel driver that is included in Windows Server 2008 R2. Therefore, some flags are not set correctly on the child objects.

Windows Server 2008 R2 file information notes

Important Windows 7 hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 R2 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, hotfixes on the Hotfix Request page are listed under both operating systems. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.

  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Server 2008 R2" section. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
