MSN image licensing and syndication rights

Use this guide to ensure images in your MSN feeds are correctly licensed and formatted for syndication. MSN assumes publishers have syndication rights unless specified. For licensed images, follow the metadata requirements to ensure successful ingestion and auto-publishing.

Syndication rights overview

MSN assumes most partners have syndication rights for their images. If that’s the case, no action is required—image syndication rights default to true and content will be ingested and published as expected.

If you do not have syndication rights but license images from one of MSN’s approved providers:

  • Send the image in your feed
  • Set <mi:hasSyndicationRights> to false
  • Provide either an Image Licensor Name or Image Credit
  • The name must match one from MSN’s approved licensor list

Note

When all metadata is correct, MSN will still auto-publish the image and associated article.

If you don’t have syndication rights and cannot meet the licensing metadata requirements:

  • Do not send images in your feed

Note

Articles without images may still auto-publish.

MSN has agreements with many image licensors, and the included image may be covered by those agreements. These include, but are not limited to:

Global image licensors

  • AFP (Agence France-Presse)
  • AP (Associated Press)
  • Getty Images
  • Reuters
