If Office isn't activated, you can use Office for a few days, but eventually Office becomes unlicensed, and all editing features are disabled. You'll see the following errors in a yellow or red banner across the top of your Office app:

"PRODUCT NOTICE <App> hasn't been activated. To keep using <App> without interruption, activate before <date>"

"PRODUCT NOTICE Most of the features of <App> have been disabled because it hasn't been activated."
To activate Office, select the Activate button in the yellow or red banner and then do one of the following:
Try or buy Office
Select a button below. After you start a Microsoft 365 trial or buy Office, select Sign in and enter the account that you used to try or buy Office.
If you own Microsoft 365, Office 2019, or Office 2016
Select Sign in and enter the account that you used to buy Office or subscribe to Microsoft 365.
If you bought Office through Microsoft Workplace Discount Program
If you have Office Professional Plus, Visio Professional, or Project Professional, select I don't want to sign in or create an account and enter your product key.
