You can handwrite notes and draw or sketch things in your notebook with OneNote for the web. This works especially well on a device with a touchscreen, but you can also draw with a mouse.

If you have a touchscreen device and you’re using a digital pen, you can start drawing immediately by pressing and moving the pen over the page canvas.

To draw with your finger or your mouse instead, you can turn on the Draw with Touch feature on the Draw tab. When this option is turned off, moving your finger across the screen on a touch-enabled device will scroll and pan the page content instead of drawing on the screen.

Notes:

  • These features are also available in OneNote in Microsoft Teams.

  • Auto-inking with a digital pen and Draw with Touch capabilities are currently supported only in Microsoft Edge and Chrome browsers.

Do the following:

  1. In OneNote for the web, click the Draw tab.

  2. On the Draw tab, select the Pen tool, and then select the Ink Color and Thickness you want.

  3. Handwrite notes or draw on the current page. You can change your color and thickness preferences at any time while drawing or writing.

Tip: To erase what you’ve drawn, use the Eraser tool. To select individual ink strokes, use the Marquee Select tool. Both tools are available on the Draw tab.

  4. When finished drawing, tap or click the Type tool at the far left of the Draw tab to switch back to text mode.

Tip: If you’re using a touchscreen device, tap your finger on the screen to display the on-screen keyboard. If you’re using a physical keyboard, you can press any key on it to return to text mode.
