Symptoms

In a Microsoft Exchange Server 2016 environment, consider the following scenario:

  • You have multiple Active Directory (AD) domains.

  • The Exchange Server(s) and the user accounts are located in different domains.

  • You run the Compare-TextMessagingVerificationCode cmdlet to verify the text messaging verification code that the user specified.

In this situation, text messaging doesn't work in Outlook Web App (OWA) and you receive the following error message:

Microsoft.Exchange.Data.Directory.ADOperationException: The requested search root 'ServerName.contoso.com/Synched Users/Users' is not within the scope of this operation. Cannot perform searches outside the scope 'contoso.com'.

Cause

This issue occurs because the ViewEntireForest parameter is set to false during the Compare-TextMessagingVerificationCode cmdlet initialization.

Resolution

For Exchange Server 2016, install Cumulative Update 9 or a later cumulative update for Exchange Server 2016.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
