The retired, out-of-support Internet Explorer 11 desktop application has been permanently disabled through a Microsoft Edge update on certain versions of Windows 10. For more information, see Internet Explorer 11 desktop app retirement FAQ.

This update installs Internet Explorer 11 on Windows Server 2012 and Windows Embedded 8 Standard.

Installation information

Note Microsoft Corporation (or a Microsoft affiliate, depending on your location) licenses this supplement to you. You can use a copy of this supplement together with each validly licensed copy of Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8 Embedded Standard (the “software”). You cannot use the supplement software if you do not have a license for the software. The license terms for the software apply to your use of this supplement.

To get the standalone package for Internet Explorer 11, go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website.  

Windows Server Update Service

This update is available as an Optional Update on Windows Server Update Service (WSUS). To get the standalone package for Internet Explorer 11, search for KB4492872.  

Windows Update

This update is available as an Optional Update on Windows Update. To get the standalone package for Internet Explorer 11, search for KB4492872.  

Prerequisites

Before you install this update, you must do either of the following:

  • Install KB4486474 or KB4487025.

  • Install the latest cumulative security update for Internet Explorer 10 or the latest monthly rollup for Windows Server 2012 and Windows Embedded 8 Standard.

Restart information

You have to restart the computer after you apply this update.  

Update replacement information

This update will replace Internet Explorer 10 with Internet Explorer 11 on Windows Server 2012 and Windows Embedded 8 Standard.Note This update is not applicable to the Server Core edition of Windows Server 2012.

Language packs for Internet Explorer 11 are available from Windows Update Catalog only. To install Internet Explorer 11 together with language packs, do the following, based on your platform:

  • Install "Internet Explorer 11 for Windows Server 2012" by using any of the delivery methods. Then, go to Windows Update Catalog, and install the Internet Explorer language pack of the desired language that is listed under the same KB number and has a title that resembles “Internet Explorer 11 Language pack for Windows Server 2012 (language code).”

  • Install "Internet Explorer 11 for Windows Embedded 8 Standard" by using any of the delivery methods. Then, go to Windows Update Catalog, and install the Internet Explorer language pack of the desired language that is listed under the same KB number and has a title that resembles “Internet Explorer 11 Language pack for Windows Embedded 8 Standard (language code).”

Be aware of the following guidelines:

  • Starting in May 2019, the following condition applies: To continue to remain secure on Internet Explorer after you install this update, you must install the “Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 11 for Windows Server 2012” or “Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 11 for Windows Embedded 8 Standard,” depending on your system.

  • Windows Embedded 8 Standard users who used the Image Configuration Editor or Image Building Wizard to remove the Internet Explorer 10 User Application can install this update to upgrade other browser platform files on their systems. The Internet Explorer browser (launcher, icon, and shortcut) will not be installed as part of the update on your systems.
