Symptoms

When you run a query that uses Adaptive join feature in SQL Server 2017, you will notice that the query fails to run. Additionally, you may receive error messages that resembles the following: 

"Bad plan error" Msg 596, Level 21, State 1, Line LineNumber Cannot continue the execution because the session is in the kill state. Msg 0, Level 20, State 0, Line LineNumber A severe error occurred on the current command. The results, if any, should be discarded.

Resolution

This issue is fixed in the following cumulative update for SQL Server:

       Cumulative Update 11 for SQL Server 2017

Each new cumulative update for SQL Server contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous cumulative update. Check out the latest cumulative updates for SQL Server:

Workaround

As a workaround for this issue, you may disable the Adaptive Join feature for the query.
