Symptoms

Assume that you use the Dynamic Management Functions (DMF) sys.dm_exec_query_statistics_xml in Microsoft SQL Server 2016 and 2017. When the query that is executed in the targeted session ID is already complete and the DMF tries to retrieve the query execution plan at the same time, an assertion error occurs.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
