What are personalized offers and discounts?

When you use Microsoft Office apps and features, you might occasionally receive notifications, emails, or other messages from Microsoft offering you things like the opportunity to try an updated version of a Microsoft app, or a new Office feature, or a discount on a Microsoft product. These offers may or may not be relevant to you, and you will not need to provide your consent to see them. However, with your permission, Microsoft can collect data about how you use Office apps and features to show you personalized versions of these offers and discounts.

What data does Microsoft use to personalize offers and discounts?

If you give Microsoft permission to collect data for personalized offers and discounts for Microsoft products, the data we collect depends on how you use Office apps and features. For example, if you use templates in PowerPoint or the Editor feature in Word or creative content in Microsoft 365, Microsoft might collect information about how often you use those apps and their features and the choices you make when you use them. The data we use to personalize offers and discounts only includes information about how you use Office apps and features—it doesn’t include the contents of your files. Microsoft will never sell your data to other companies. For more information about how Microsoft processes personal data and for what purposes, check out the Microsoft Privacy Statement.

Notes:

  • Though we do not use the contents of your files for personalized offers, there are other features in Office that do use your content to provide design recommendations, editing suggestions, data insights, and similar features. For more info, see Connected experiences in Office.

  • If you choose not to personalize your offers, Microsoft won’t collect the data used to provide this personalization, but you might still see some offers that are not based on this data and which might be less relevant to you.

What are some examples of personalized offers and discounts?

Here are some examples of the different kinds of personalized offers and discounts that might appear:

  • If you have Office 2016 and you like to use PowerPoint templates to create visually appealing presentations, you might receive a personalized offer to start a free Microsoft 365 trial or sign up for a discounted subscription so you can enjoy the benefits of premium templates, which are exclusively available with Microsoft 365.

  • If you have a Microsoft 365 subscription that is about to expire, and you frequently use Editor in Word to create high-quality content, you might see offers to renew your subscription for a discount so you can continue to get value from Editor, which is a premium offering with Microsoft 365.

  • If you are using a trial version of Microsoft 365, and you discover that you enjoy using premium creative content, which is an exclusive offering with a Microsoft 365 subscription, you might see offers encouraging you to sign up for a discounted Microsoft 365 subscription so you can continue to receive premium creative content.

Where do personalized offers and discounts appear?

If you choose to personalize your offers and discounts, you might receive them as notifications in Office or you might receive them in email, depending on your settings. You can change your preferences for how you receive offers, discounts, and other promotional communications on your Microsoft account profile page.

Where can I find the setting for personalized offers and discounts so that I can turn it on or off?

If you're using an Office app, you can change the setting that controls personalized offers and discounts for Microsoft products by going to File > Account and then under Account Privacy, selecting Manage Settings. You'll also find this setting on the Office privacy settings page, where it applies to Office products you use with your Microsoft account.

What happens if I choose not to see personalized offers and discounts?

If you choose not to personalize your offers, Microsoft won’t collect data about how you use Office apps and features, but you might still see some offers that are not based on this data and which might be less relevant to you. You can always choose to personalize your offers later if you change your mind. To find out how to view your privacy settings, see the Windows tab of the Account Privacy Settings page.

You might also still get recommendations to try products or features that are already available to you, and you might also still receive personalized offers from elsewhere in Microsoft, depending on your settings. These settings are different than the setting for personalized offers in Office. To learn more about Office recommendations, see In-product recommendations in Office.

Which Office apps are affected by this setting?

  • This setting only applies to purchased consumer versions of Office apps running on Windows.

  • This setting applies to the following Office apps, Version 2112 and later: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Visio, Access, Publisher, and Project.

  • If you’re under 18 years old—or under some other age depending on laws where you live—we won't collect this data and this setting may be unavailable. To learn more, see Privacy for kids, teenagers, and families.

Note: This setting does not apply to OneNote for Windows 10, which is pre-installed on all editions of Windows 10.
