Steps for Creating an ODBC Data Source with Pervasive.SQL

What are the steps for configuring a Data Source for Pervasive.SQL?


Resolution

Before you can create a data source, your DDF files must already exist. See Knowledge Base Article 887946 for information on generating your DDF files. After the DDF files are generated, then proceed with the steps on this Techknowledge.


The following steps apply for Pervasive.SQL 2000 and Pervasive.SQL V8.


Creating an ODBC Connection with Pervasive.SQL on an NT/2000 Server


1. On the NT/2000 Server. Go to: Start | Programs | Pervasive | Pervasive.SQL 2000 | Utilities | User Count Administrator. Your User License must be installed. If it is, it will list your total users in the Number of Licensed Users. If it is not, your Number of Licensed Users will be empty.


2. On the Client Machine. Create the data source:


a. If you are on Windows 98 or Windows NT 4.0, go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | ODBC 32 Administrator. If you are on Windows 2000 go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Administrative Tools | ODBC 32 Administrator. You can either add a User or System DSN.


b. Click Add. Choose Pervasive ODBC Client Interface.


c. Type in a data source Name. This is the data source on the local machine.


d. Type in the server name. Can either be the server name or the IP Address. Click Create.


e. A logon window will open. You must type in an administrator user name and password for the server machine. It must have administrator rights on the server.


f. Type in a data source name. This is the data source that will be created on the NT/2000 Server.


g. For the Database Name, Click Create.


h. Type in a Database Name.


i. For the Dictionary Location, click the browse button and point to the DDF files. You will not see the DDF's in this browse window, so make sure they exist where you are pointing. The DDF's need to be generated with the DDF generator before creating a DSN.


j. Click OK on the Create Database window.


k. Click OK on the Create Engine DSN Window.


l. To test your data source connection, click Test on the Pervasive ODBC Client DSN Setup window.


m. Once it says Connection Successful, the data source is created.


3. Test your data source in Access or another application.


Creating an ODBC Connection with Pervasive.SQL on a Netware Server.


1. On the client. Go to: Start | Programs | Pervasive | Pervasive.SQL 2000 Netware | Utilities | User Count Administrator. Your User License must be installed. If it is, it will list your total users in the Number of Licensed Users. If it is not, your Number of Licensed Users will be empty.


2. On the client. Create the data source:


a. If you are on Windows 98 or Windows NT 4.0 go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | ODBC32 Administrator. If you are on Windows 2000 go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Administrative Tools | ODBC 32 Administrator You can either add a User or System DSN.


b. Click Add. Choose Pervasive ODBC Client Interface.


c. Type in a data source Name. This is the data source on the local machine.

m. Once it says Connection Successful, the data source is created.


3. Test your data source in Access or another application.


Creating an ODBC Connection with Pervasive.SQL on a Standalone Machine.


1. Create the data source:


a. If you are on Windows 98 or Windows NT 4.0 go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | ODBC32 Administrator. If you are on Windows 2000 go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Administrative Tools | ODBC 32 Administrator You can either add a User or System DSN.


b. Click Add. Choose Pervasive ODBC Engine Interface.


c. Type in a data source Name. This is the data source on the local machine.


d. For the Database Name, Click Create.


e. Type in a Database Name.


f. For the Dictionary Location, click the browse button and point to the DDF files. You will notsee the DDF's in this browse window, so make sure they exist where you are pointing. TheDDF's need to be generated with the DDF generator before creating the DSN.


g. Click Ok on the Create Database window.


h. Click OK on the Create Engine DSN Window.


i. To test your data source connection, click Test on the Pervasive ODBC Client DSN Setup window.
