Use a screen reader to navigate your Microsoft account

This article is for people who use a screen reader program such as Windows Narrator, JAWS, or NVDA with Microsoft 365 products. A Microsoft account is a personal account that gives you access to Microsoft products and services. This article guides on how to navigate the Microsoft account dashboard using a screen reader.

Go to the Microsoft account on your browser.

Major landmarks on the page are as follows:

  1. Navigation landmark:

    1. Microsoft link–To open the Microsoft site.

    2. Account–To bring the user back to the Microsoft account sign-in page.

    3. Help–To navigate to Microsoft support.

    4. Search–Facilitates searching within Microsoft.

    5. Sign in to your account–To access your Microsoft account.

  2. Main landmark:

    1. Sign in–For signing into the Microsoft account. For step-by-step guidance on signing in, go to Sign into your Microsoft account dashboard.

    2. Create an account–For creating a new account.

Navigate your account dashboard

The Microsoft account dashboard helps manage personal information and security settings, track subscriptions, and order history, and manage your payment and billing options.

Notes: 

  • Certain elements may look different based on whether you have a device and have an active subscription.

  • You might need to expand the sections to access some of these elements.

The major landmarks in the Microsoft account dashboard are as follows:

  1. Navigation landmark:

    1. App launcher–To explore apps like Outlook, OneDrive, Word, and Excel.

    2. Microsoft account–To redirect to the Microsoft account home page.

    3. Your info–To view and edit your profile and personal details.

    4. Privacy–For managing your privacy data associated with your Microsoft account.

    5. Security–To manage your phone number password and how you verify during sign-in.

    6. Payment & billing–To view your order history, payment options, address book, and billing help.

    7. Services & subscriptions–To manage Microsoft product subscriptions.

    8. Devices–To view and register devices attached to your account.

    9. Help–To explore topics that you might need help with. A list of popular help topics like account security and subscriptions is available.

    10. Account manager for username–Lets you Sign out of the current account or Sign in with a different account.

      • It also has options to visit My Microsoft account (to go to the Microsoft account home page) or My profile (to open Your info dashboard).

  2. Main landmark:

    Tip: Select Skip to main content at the start of the page to directly go to the main landmark.

    1. Your info:

      1. Navigate and select when you hear “Add a profile picture link” to add or change the profile picture. A dialog will open.

        1. Select Add a photo to open a file picker dialog.

        2. Type the name of the image in the File name edit box or browse through the files and select the desired image.

        3. Select Open to upload the image on the dialog. Navigate and select the Zoom-in or Zoom-out button to edit your photo.

      2.  Select Edit name to edit the username.

      3. To update the profile information like language or country, select Edit profile info.

      4. Select Edit account info to add or remove an email account, or phone number, or change sign-in preferences.

    2. Get Microsoft 365 services and subscriptions:

      1. Select the Get Microsoft 365 link to manage your Microsoft 365 subscriptions.

        Note:  Get Microsoft 365 link will only be visible if the user does not already have a subscription.

      2. Follow the screen reader prompts to choose the subscription you want to manage or add a subscription that fits your needs (yearly or monthly, for family or personal).

      3. Go to See other Microsoft products link to explore the products that come with Microsoft 365.

    3. Change password:

      1. Select Change password to update your password. Enter the current password and type the new password twice. Then, select the Save button.

    4. Microsoft 365:

      1. Navigate the active Microsoft product subscriptions.

      2. If there are no active subscriptions, select the Get Microsoft 365 button to explore and add a Microsoft 365 subscription.

      3. Follow the screen reader prompt to choose the subscription that fits your needs (yearly or monthly, for family or personal).

    5. Microsoft storage:

      1. ​​​​​​​This area shows the storage information in the form of a horizontal bar chart reflecting the storage acquired by files, photos, attachments, and more, across your Microsoft account.

      2. To explore options to get more storage, select the Get more storage link.

    6. ​​​​​​​Devices:

      1. ​​​​​​​This area shows the devices registered with your Microsoft account and lets you manage the information.

      2. Select the Add device button to register a new device to the account.

      3. Browse and explore the related links such as, Schedule a repair and Online support.

    7. ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Privacy:

      1. Open the Privacy dashboard to manage privacy settings in your products and services. To know about navigation in the Privacy dashboard, refer to Use screen reader to navigate the privacy dashboard.

      2. Browse and select the links to explore privacy-related content such as Privacy statement or Apps and services that can access your data.

    8. Security:

      1. The Security dashboard allows you to manage your password, and verification settings and provides access to advanced security options.

      2. To directly access the change password page, select the Change password button in the Security element.

      3. Select See your sign-in activity to view recent sign-in activities in the account.

      4. To access more security options, select Additional security options.

    9. ​​​​​​​Payment options:

      1. Use the Add payment method button to add a payment method such as debit card, net banking, etc.

      2. Select View transactions or View notifications to go to the Manage your payments page and view the overall information related to payments.

    10. ​​​​​​​Order history:

      1. ​​​​​​​This area shows the recent purchases made with your Microsoft account.

      2. Select Get billing help to reach out to Microsoft support for any billing issues.

      3. To explore the shopping options, select View order history and then navigate to the Start shopping button.

    11. ​​​​​​​Discover Microsoft services:

      1. Navigate and then select when you hear, “Learn more about your Microsoft account” to access the Microsoft products and services linked with your account.

    12. ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Family:

      1. ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Select the Add a member button to add a family member to the account. This allows you to share access and manage activities with the family.

    13. ​​​​​​​Rewards:

      1. Navigate and select when you hear “Tell me more about Microsoft rewards” to see the available reward points, daily earned points breakdown, and how to redeem them.

      2. Select Earn to explore ways to earn more points.

      3. To explore the ways to redeem your rewards, select Redeem.

      4. Select Status to check the overall status of your rewards.

    14. ​​​​​​​Outlook:

      1. ​​​​​​​Select the Open Outlook.com link to open Outlook in a new tab.
