Apps that aren't compatible with newer versions of Windows

If an app won't open after you've updated to a newer version of Windows, it probably isn't compatible, which means it might impact PC stability and performance. This sometimes includes apps that worked with a previous version of Windows, including previous major versions of the Windows you are currently running. If an app is incompatible with your version of Windows, when you try to open it you'll get a message telling you that the app or game can't run on your device.

If you got the app from Microsoft Store, see Get updates for apps and games in Microsoft Store for instructions on how to update the app. If you didn't get the app from Microsoft Store, or if you can't find an update there, check the app publisher's website for a new or updated version. Try doing a search for "Windows compatibility" on the app publisher's website.

If you don't find a newer version of the app, you can use the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter. For more info, see How to make older programs compatible.

Apps that might not work perfectly

In some cases, when you open an app you'll get a message telling you that the app or game might not work correctly. You can open and run the app, but you might have some minor issues. For example, the app might flicker when you reposition the window, or become unresponsive when you’re working on a remote PC.

Note: If you can't install your usual antivirus app right away, we've got you covered by the built-in, automatic Windows antivirus solution. See Stay protected with Windows Security.
