Whiteboard files are saved in either Azure or OneDrive for Business, depending on your account.

Files created by personal account users are saved in Azure. Files created by commercial account users are saved in OneDrive for Business, except in the following scenario:

  • A board was initiated on a Surface Hub or a Microsoft Teams Room device.

Azure whiteboards can only be accessed from the board picker. OneDrive whiteboards can be accessed from the board picker and the Whiteboards folder in OneDrive.

Feature differences

Azure whiteboards do not offer the following features:

  • Collaborative cursors

  • Laser pointer

  • Roster

  • Last edited information

  • Office.com search

  • Local data residency

  • Retention policies

  • E-discovery and data loss prevention

  • Recycle bin

  • External sharing within Microsoft Teams
