On the View tab, select the check box next to Gridlines. Select it again to turn them off.
Gridlines are light gray lines that, unlike Borders, appear between all cells on a worksheet. They are either all on, or all off. If you're not sure if they're on or off, move to an empty area of your worksheet and toggle the setting.
