Symptoms
Consider the following scenario:

You insert some linked objects that are located on a network share into a Microsoft Word 2010 document.

You configure the linked objects to be updated manually.
-
You save and then close the document.
-
You click to clear the Update automatic links at open check box in Word 2010 options.

You set the value of the NoActivateOleLinkObjAtOpen registry value to 1.
Note You can follow the steps that are described in the "Registry key information" section to set this registry value. -
You reopen the document in Word 2010.
In this scenario, it takes a long time for the document to open.
Resolution
To resolve this issue, apply the following update:

Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.

Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Word\Options

On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Dword Value.

Type NoActivateOleLinkObjAtOpen, and then press ENTER.

In the details pane, right-click NoActivateOleLinkObjAtOpen, and then click Modify.

In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.

Exit Registry Editor.
