When you try to start an Office application, or you try to open an Office document, you may receive an error similar to:

C:\windows\system32\msvcp140.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Error status 0xc000012f

The file name could be different but the error code is 0xc000012f.

Resolution

Try the following steps to resolve this issue:

  1. Check for the latest Windows Updates. Click the Start button or the Windows key on your keyboard and type Check for Updates to quickly get to that dialog.

    If that doesn't resolve the problem try:

  2. A Quick Repair of Office. Click the Start button or the Windows key on your keyboard and type Programs to get to the Add or Remove Programs tool. Find Microsoft Office on the list and click Modify (or Change if you're on an older version of Windows) then select Quick Repair.

    If that doesn't resolve the problem try:

  3. Uninstall and reinstall Office by following the steps in Uninstall Office from a PC.

    If that doesn't resolve the problem try:

  4. Reinstall the DLL files by downloading and installing Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio.
