Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You use Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 on a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.

  • You enable smart card PIN caching on the computer.

  • You install the following update on the computer:

    2288953 MS10-064: Description of the security update for Office Outlook 2007: September 14, 2010

In this scenario, you are prompted to enter the smart card PIN every time that you try to send a signed email message or read an encrypted email message.

  • Location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\GSC\Policies\PIN\Authentication Key: MinutesType: REG_DWORDValue: 0x00000005 Note This registry entry setting configures the PIN caching feature to cache a smart card PIN for five minutes.
