Symptoms

In Microsoft Outlook 2013, global address list (GAL) photos may not be displayed as expected in email messages. This issue may occur for the photo of one user, several users, or all users. Additionally, it may occur regardless of whether the Microsoft Exchange Server email account is configured for Online Mode or Cached Exchange Mode.

However, the same users' photos are displayed successfully in the Outlook Address Book, in other Microsoft Office applications such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel, and in earlier versions of Outlook such as Outlook 2010.

Cause

This issue occurs if the proxyAddresses attribute for the Active Directory user object has an email address prefix without a value—for example, one of the following prefixes and without a value after the colon (:) character:

X500:

SMTP:In the following example, the attribute value triggers this problem because the X500: email address type has no value:

proxyAddresses (2): X500:; SMTP:pruivo@fourthcoffee.com

Resolution

To resolve this issue, either delete the blank email address type in the proxyAddresses attribute or modify it by adding the correct value or values for the email address.
