Symptoms

Assume that you use AlwaysOn availability groups (AG) in SQL Server 2017 on a Pacemaker cluster. You may notice that Pacemaker fails to promote an AG replica to the master role and the following error message:

INFO: promote: ERROR: DateTime Could not promote local replica to PRIMARY role: RoleName: This operation cannot be performed on the availability group 'GroupName' because it has EXTERNAL cluster type. Use the cluster management tools to perform the operation.

Resolution

A fix for this problem is included in Cumulative Update 7 for SQL Server 2017.
