Symptoms
Assume that you have a Master Data Services database (MDS) in SQL Server 2016 and 2017. When you try to upgrade the MDS database to the latest version, you may notice that the upgrade fails after a few minutes. Additionally, you may receive error messages that resembles the following:
Microsoft.MasterDataServices.Configuration.ConfigurationException: Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'IF'. ---> System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'IF'.
Cause
This issue occurs when you use many-to-many (M2M) derived hierarchies with a long attribute name. Then, the CONTACT function truncates the SQL statement.
Status
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
