Symptoms
Consider the following scenario:
-
You have a computer that is running an Arabic version of Windows 7 or of Windows Server 2008 R2.
-
You run Microsoft Excel or another Microsoft Office application that contains an Arabic number (Also known as an English number or a Latin digit) on the computer.
-
You change the Arabic number to a Hindi number (Also known as an Arabic digit).
In this scenario, the decimal symbol and digit grouping symbols are not changed. Therefore, you cannot distinguish the decimal symbol from zero and you may read the data incorrectly.
For example, when you change 1,000.123 from an Arabic number to a Hindi number, the number becomes ١,٠٠٠.١٢٣. Therefore, you cannot distinguish the decimal symbol from zero.
Note This issue does not occur in earlier versions of Windows.Â
Cause
How Arabic fonts are handled was changed in Windows Vista and in Windows 7 to fully comply with Unicode. This caused a change in the way that digits are substituted. Therefore, this issue occurs.
