Top sections of some characters in a select box or drop-down list are not displayed in Internet Explorer 10 in Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

Internet Explorer 10 is installed on a computer that is running Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012.
You browse to a website that contains a select box or drop-down list.
The select box or drop-down list contains characters that are formatted to use the MS Gothic 12-point font.

In this scenario, the top sections of some characters are not displayed.

To resolve this issue, install the most recent cumulative security update for Internet Explorer. To do this, go to the following Microsoft website:
