When you use a work or school account, your experience may be a little different. For more information, see the Copilot in Windows: work and school accounts section.

When you're not signed in using a Microsoft or Microsoft Entra account, your experience will be limited. For more information, see the Copilot in Windows: local accounts section.

Interact with Copilot in Windows

Copilot in Windows is designed to enhance your productivity seamlessly. By default, it appears as a sidebar overlay on the right side of your screen, allowing you to access its features without interrupting your workflow. It functions like any other application, providing the flexibility to use it as needed.

For a more integrated experience, you can opt for the side-by-side mode by clicking the Show side by side button located at the top right corner. In this mode, Copilot runs alongside your active applications without overlapping your desktop content, ensuring uninterrupted access to both your work and Copilot’s functionalities.

If you need to close Copilot in Windows, just select the  at the top like you would for any other app. When you reopen Copilot in Windows, it opens exactly how you left it with your previous chat content intact. Copilot in Windows also respects your Windows theme including high contrast themes.

Chatting with Copilot in Windows

You can ask Copilot in Windows a range of questions, from simple to complex. If you want to call your family in Cyprus, you can quickly check the local time to make sure you’re not waking them up in the middle of the night. Want to plan a trip to visit them in Cyprus? Ask Copilot in Windows to find flights and accommodations for mid-winter break. While you're typing into the chat pane, Microsoft Copilot provides autocomplete assistance to make chatting easier. Just use Tab to accept the suggested text. To start fresh with a new chat thread, use the New topic button to clear your previous chat conversation.

Copilot in Windows has the ability to use the context from Microsoft Edge to enhance the response. You can ask it to summarize a webpage you're viewing without having to provide the website address or copy and paste long text. Copilot in Windows integrates with the clipboard and provides the ability to drag and drop images to provide rich interaction, allowing you to get things done faster.

Three different chat tones are available for Copilot in Windows. You can toggle the tone of chat from Precise, which focuses on shorter, more search-focused answers, to Creative, which gives responses that are longer and more descriptive. The middle setting, Balanced, is somewhere in-between.

Copilot in Windows: work and school accounts

Copilot in Windows uses Microsoft Copilot, but if you’re signed into your Windows device with a work or school account, your IT administrator might have policies that change or disable Copilot in Windows. You might see Copilot in Windows using the following chat providers instead of Microsoft Copilot:

  • Microsoft Copilot with commercial data protection (formerly known as Bing Chat Enterprise)

  • Microsoft Copilot with Graph-grounded chat (formerly known as Microsoft 365 Chat)

When you're using Copilot with commercial data protection, chat history isn't available, and the chat pane displays the following message: Your personal and company data are protected in this chat.

Students typically don't have access to Copilot in Windows, but faculty members and higher education students over 18 years of age may have access to Copilot with commercial data protection.

Note: Copilot in Windows isn't available to individuals under 13 years of age signed in using a Microsoft account.

Copilot in Windows: local accounts

Microsoft Copilot is designed to enhance your productivity by leveraging the power of AI. To access the full capabilities of Copilot, users are required to sign into Windows using an account (Microsoft account or Microsoft Entra Account).

For users who have not signed into Windows with an account, Copilot offers the ability to have five interactions per session with a maximum of ten interactions, allowing you to experience a preview of its capabilities. After reaching this limit, signing in is necessary to continue using Copilot.

Additionally, users who sign into Windows with an Active Directory account have the option to access Copilot. In such cases, Copilot will attempt to find and connect with a Microsoft Entra Account if available. If neither a Microsoft account nor an Entra account is associated, the ten-message limit will apply.

It’s important to note that certain Copilot features in Windows, such as "turn on focus timer" require a sign-in and will not be available to users who have not signed in. For the most seamless experience, we recommend signing in with an account.

Note: For Windows 11, Copilot for local accounts is available now and requires a reboot before you can use it. For Windows 10, Copilot for local accounts will be rolled out gradually over the next couple of months.

Microsoft’s commitment to responsible AI and Privacy

Microsoft has been working to advance AI responsibly since 2017, when we first defined our AI principles and later operationalized our approach through our Responsible AI Standard. Privacy and security are principles as we develop and deploy AI systems. We work to help our customers use our AI products responsibly, sharing our learnings, and building trust-based partnerships. For more about our responsible AI efforts, the  principles that guide us, and the tooling and capabilities we've created to assure that we develop AI technology responsibly, see Responsible AI.

In upcoming releases, we'll be introducing more advanced skills for performing common tasks and changing settings because AI is a tool to serve you. These tools are controlled by your prompts to respect your autonomy, but enhance your productivity. For example, we'll also be releasing the ability to enable and select plugins to help your accomplish more. Like other transformational technologies, harnessing the benefits of AI isn't risk-free. A core part of Microsoft's Responsible AI program is designed to identify potential harms, measure their propensity to occur, and build mitigations to address them. Guided by our AI Principles and our Responsible AI Standard, we seek to identify, measure, and mitigate potential harms and misuse of skills and plugins while securing the transformative and beneficial uses that the new experiences provide.

Keep in mind…

Copilot chat leverages GPT, a new AI system from OpenAI that creates text based on a prompt. As GPT is a new system, it may create things you didn’t expect. If you find content to be unexpected or offensive, send us feedback so we can make it better.

Content may contain inaccuracies or sensitive material because it is generated by AI that draws from the internet. Be sure to review and verify the information it generates. Similar requests may result in the same content being generated.

We want to hear from you!

If there's something you like, and especially if there's something you don't like, about Copilot you can submit feedback to Microsoft by clicking the  icon at the top right of the side bar in Copilot in Windows to submit feedback on any issues that you run into.
