Your Windows 10 device might show you a notification indicating your device needs an update. Here’s what you need to know if you see this message: “Your device has reached the end of service. Here’s how you can ensure continued support.”

Why am I seeing this notification?

You’re seeing this notification because your version of Windows 10 is out of service. Windows attempted to update this device several times, but it hasn’t received an update in a significant amount of time. This might be because your device doesn’t meet the minimum hardware requirements for Windows 10.

Regular updates help keep your device and data secure and help protect your PC from viruses, spyware, and other malware. Your security is important to us, so we want to let you know what to do in these instances.

What are the minimum hardware requirements?

To check if your device meets minimum hardware requirements, see How to Check Windows 10 Computer System Specs & Requirements

We recommend checking your processor, installed RAM, and storage. Here’s how:

  • Processor and installed RAM: Select Start > Settings > System > About.

  • Storage: Select File Explorer on your taskbar, then select This PC. In Devices and drives, look at OSDisk to see total storage space available on your device.

What can I do if my device doesn't meet the minimum hardware requirements?

It might not be possible to upgrade the hardware in your device. Sometimes an older device can’t support newer versions of Windows 10, leaving it vulnerable to security threats. If you use your device frequently, you may want to consider a new device to stay safe and get the latest Windows experience.

Why else should I consider a new PC?

In addition to keeping your data safe with updates, a new PC opens up new and faster Windows experiences. Here are some other reasons to consider a new PC:

  • Faster performance, start up, and day to day tasks are faster with SSDs.

  • Longer battery life on laptops and other portable devices.

  • Windows Hello for easy sign-in on your device.

  • More ways to interact with your device with pen and touch.

I think my device meets the minimum hardware requirements. What can I do?

It’s possible that an issue on your device is preventing the update. These issues may include driver problems, not enough free disk space, or other issues.

You can do several things to help get your device updated and more secure:

  • Use Windows 10 Update Assistant to help you install the latest updates. For more info, see Windows 10 Update Assistant.

  • Reinstall Windows 10 to return your PC to a cleaner state and try to fix issues. For instructions, see Reinstall Windows 10.
