In Teams for your personal life, it’s easy to start a group chat with your friends and family.

  1. Tap New Chat  Teams new chat icon  near the bottom of the screen.

  2. In the search field, enter the name, phone number, or email of those you want to include in the group. You can also choose from the list of Suggestions, then tap Next.

    Note: If someone isn’t already on Teams, they will either receive an invite to join Teams or they may participate as an SMS participant in the group. Learn more about chatting via SMS.

  3. Type a message and Send  The Send button in Teams  it to finish creating your new group.

    Tip: You can go to any one-on-one chat, tap More options  More options button and tap Create a new group chat. Add in participants you want to invite using their name, phone number, or email in the To: line and Send  The Send button in Teams  a message to create the group.

Customize your group chat

Tap More options  More options button, then select Chat details, where you can:

  • Add members  Teams add member to chat  to the chat.

  • Edit the group chat's picture.

    • You'll be able to Open photo library, take a new picture with Camera, or View the chat's photo.

  • Teams edit button  Name group chat.

  • Teams mute chat icon  Switch Mute chat on or off.

  • Teams pin chat icon  Pin the chat.

  • Copy meeting link button  Switch Allow join via link on or off.

  • Teams Android share icon  Share the link to join the chat.

  • Teams leave chat icon  Leave the chat.

  • View a list of Participants.

Customize your group chat

Tap your group chat name or the list of participants to open Chat details, where you can:

  • Edit the group chat's picture.

    • You'll be able to Take a new photo, Choose existing photo, or View the chat's photo.

  • Teams edit button  Change the Group chat name.

  • Teams mute chat icon  Switch Mute chat on or off.

  • Teams pin chat icon  Pin the chat.

  • Copy meeting link button  Switch Allow join via link on or off.

  • Teams iOS share icon  Share the link to join the chat.

  • Teams iOS add member to chat icon  Add people to the chat

  • View a list of Participants.

  • Teams leave chat icon  Leave the chat.

  4. In the To: line, type the phone numbers, email addresses or names of those you want to include in this group.

  5. Type a message and send it to finish creating your new group.

    Note: You can also go to any one-on-one chat, click Add People  Teams iOS add member to chat icon  and add people to the chat to create a group chat.

 

Customize your group chat 

At the top of your group, you can:

  • Teams edit button  Name the group chat.

  • Video call button  Video call the group.

  • Audio call button Audio call the group.

  • Teams share screen icon  Screen sharing shares your screen to the group chat.

    Note:  Screen sharing in a group chat is not currently available in Teams for Windows 11.

  • Teams add member to chat  View and add participants view the participant list and add people to the group. You can also remove people from the group by selecting this button, hovering over the name of the person you want to remove, and selecting the X next to the name. 

  • Teams pop out chat icon  Pop out chat opens the group chat in its own window.

Note: To leave a group chat, hover over the chat in the chat list and select More options  More options button, then select Leave.
