Thank you for upgrading from Teams Free (classic) to a Microsoft 365 subscription! Now that you've got your own new username and password for Teams, you need to make sure all your team members do, too. This procedure will walk you through the following:

  • Adding the upgraded license to each member of the team ("user").

  • Changing each person's username and generating a temporary password.

Here's how:

  1. If you're not signed in to the Microsoft 365 admin center, sign in with your new username and password.

  2. On the admin dashboard page, select Active users.

  3. Select the checkbox next to the name of the person you want to add.

Note: Don't select any names that have a small globe icon next to them. This indicates that the person is a guest. You can add them as a guest of the new team later.

  4. Next to Username, select Edit.

    Edit username
  5. Enter a new username for the person.

Make sure the domain name shown in the dropdown list matches the domain name you choose when you upgraded. If it doesn't, look in the list for the right one and select it.

    New username
  6. Select + Add.

  7. Select Set as primary for the newly created alias.

    Set as primary
  8. Select Save, then Close.

  9. Select Reset password.

Make sure that Auto-generate password and Make this user change their password when they first sign in are selected. They should be selected by default.

  10. Select Reset.

  11. The next screen shows the new username and temporary password. Enter a known good email address for the person, then select Send email and close. Or, copy down the username and password information and get it to the person another way.

Repeat steps 3 through 11 for each person you want to add.
