Learn more about chatting via SMS

Teams for your personal life isn't just for people with smart devices, now your friends and family can join the conversation via SMS. As an SMS participant, they'll be able to send and receive messages in group chats.   

Note: SMS is only available in US, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, India and Great Britain. SMS participants from other countries will receive an invite to join Teams and join this group. Standard SMS messaging rates may apply to SMS recipients who reply to chats.

Commands 

SMS participants can use the following list of commands: 

#continue: To continue getting SMS from a group without sending a message to the group.  

#mute: To pause getting messages for a group.  

#unmute: To resume getting messages for a group.  

#groupdetails: To show the group name and list the group participants.  

#listcommands: To list all available SMS commands.  

#exit: To leave a group.  

#myname: To enable SMS participants to rename herself on chat.  

#stopall: To stop all SMS from Teams. This command will remove you from all your groups. Teams App users will not be able to add you to any group.  

#startall: To resume all SMS from Teams. Teams App users will be able to add you to group. You can send this command to +1 585-666-6650 or to any group of which you were part when you used #stopall command. 

#export: To export your SMS conversations. You need to send this command to +1 585-666-6650 to get a copy of the conversations in which you are currently a participant. 

Limits of SMS group chat 

SMS participants can receive up to 1,000 SMS messages per chat in supported countries, and 100 messages per chat in India and Great Britain. Messages will not be delivered to SMS participants who’ve met the SMS message limit. The only way an SMS participants can continue receiving messages or reply in that particular chat is to join Teams and download the app. SMS participants are also not able to receive rich media messages due to the constraints of using SMS. Participants who are not active in any group for more than 30 days will be automatically removed due to inactivity. They can be added back to the group at any time via a new chat invitation.
