In Teams for your personal life, when trying to sign in or create a new account, you might receive a message "This phone number is already taken. Sign in with that number or use a different one". This means that your phone number is already associated with another Microsoft account. There are a few things that can help with this message:

  • You can skip adding this phone number to this account by selecting Continue when asked if you want to transfer or change the number. This means that the phone number is still associated with the same Microsoft account; nothing is changed. You might choose this option if the phone number you're using needs to stay associated with another Microsoft account you have.

  • You can use your phone number to sign in since it’s already a Microsoft account. Select Sign in from the message and follow the prompts. Learn more about how to find your Microsoft account.

  • You can select Change number and go back to the phone number entry screen to enter a different number to use with the account.

  • If you’ve recently gotten the phone number (or it’s an alias for a different Microsoft account and you want to associate it with this Microsoft account), select Transfer number from the message, enter the password for your account, and follow any remaining prompts to remove it from the current Microsoft account and move it to the Microsoft account you’d like to use.
