Learn how to format your data in Excel so that you can use Copilot to get insights, generate formulas for new columns, and highlight, sort, and filter your data.

Copilot in Excel can only be used with Excel files (.xlsx, .xlsb, or .xlsm) that have been saved to OneDrive or Microsoft 365SharePoint locations with AutoSave turned on. Make sure that your data is in a supported format such as a table. For more details, see Format data for Copilot in Excel.

In the Copilot pane, ask Copilot to find the data you're looking for. You can copy and paste some of the example prompts, or create your own. Copilot takes a moment to collect the data. If the data that Copilot found is what you want, select Insert to new sheet to copy the data into a new sheet.

When you're updating budgets, creating financial models, or analyzing data, Copilot uses Excel's most powerful tools like tables, charts, PivotTables, and formulas to help you get the job done.

If you want to see specific data from a large data set, you can ask Copilot to create a PivotTable. With Copilot, you don't have to do a lot of steps—just ask for what you want. Let's say you have a large data set from your Marketing team.

Sometimes you might need to import data from one Excel workbook into another. With Copilot in Excel, you can use Power Query to import the data directly and create a refreshable connection. Note: To ask Copilot to add data from files, you must have a Copilot license and a stable internet connection.

Copilot shows insights as charts, Pivot Tables, summaries, trends, or outliers. Format your data in a table or supported range for Copilot to read. You'll find the Copilot icon on the ribbon in the home tab. Choose the icon to see conversation starters and chat with Copilot.
