Security-only update

Summary

Learn more about this security update, including improvements and fixes, any known issues, and how to get the update.

Important:

  • Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 have reached the end of mainstream support and are now in extended support. Starting in July 2020, there will no longer be optional, non-security releases (known as "C" releases) for this operating system. Operating systems in extended support have only cumulative monthly security updates (known as the "B" or Update Tuesday release).

  • For information about the various types of Windows updates, such as critical, security, driver, service packs, and so on, please see the following article. To view other notes and messages, see the Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 update history home page.

Improvements and fixes

This security update includes quality improvements. Key changes include:

  • Addresses a known issue that might prevent devices from downloading and installing printer drivers when the devices attempt to connect to a network printer for the first time. We have observed this issue on devices that access printers using a print server that uses HTTP connections.

  • Addresses a known issue that prevents an Internet print server from properly packaging modified printer properties before sending the package to the client.

  • Addresses an issue in which certain apps might have unexpected results when rendering some user interface elements or when drawing within the app. You might encounter this issue with apps that use GDI+ and set a zero (0) width pen object on displays with high dots per inch (DPI) or resolution, or if the app is using scaling.

For more information about the resolved security vulnerabilities, please refer to the new Security Update Guide website and the November 2021 Security Updates.

Workaround

Certain operations, such as rename, that you perform on files or folders that are on a Cluster Shared Volume (CSV) may fail with the error, “STATUS_BAD_IMPERSONATION_LEVEL (0xC00000A5)”. This occurs when you perform the operation on a CSV owner node from a process that doesn’t have administrator privilege.

Do one of the following:

  • Perform the operation from a process that has administrator privilege.

  • Perform the operation from a node that doesn’t have CSV ownership.

Microsoft is working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.

After installing this update, Windows print clients might encounter the following errors when connecting to a remote printer shared on a Windows print server:

  • 0x000006e4 (RPC_S_CANNOT_SUPPORT)

  • 0x0000007c (ERROR_INVALID_LEVEL)

  • 0x00000709 (ERROR_INVALID_PRINTER_NAME)

Note The printer connection issues described in this issue are specific to print servers and are not commonly observed in devices designed for home use. Printing environments affected by this issue are more commonly found in enterprises and organizations.

This issue is resolved in KB5008285.

After installing this update on your Domain Controller (DC), you might have authentication failures on servers relating to Kerberos Tickets acquired via S4u2self. The authentication failures are a result of Kerberos Tickets acquired via S4u2self and used as evidence tickets for protocol transition to delegate to backend services which fail signature validation. Kerberos authentication will fail on Kerberos delegation scenarios that rely on the front-end service to retrieve a Kerberos ticket on behalf of a user to access a backend service.

Important Kerberos delegation scenarios where a Kerberos client provides the front-end service with an evidence ticket are not impacted. Pure Azure Active Directory environments are not impacted by this issue.

End users in your environment might be unable to sign into services or applications using Single Sign On (SSO) using Active Directory on-premises or in a hybrid Azure Active Directory environment. Updates installed on the client Windows devices will not cause or affect this issue.

For more symptoms and specific errors related to this known issue, please see the known issue on Windows Release Health.

This issue is resolved in KB5008603.

After installing this update, Microsoft Installer (MSI) might have issues repairing or updating apps. Apps that are known to be affected include some apps from Kaspersky. Affected apps might fail to open after an update or repair has been attempted.

This issue is resolved in KB5008285.

How to get this update

Before installing this update

We strongly recommend that you install the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating system before you install the latest Rollup. SSUs improve the reliability of the update process to mitigate potential issues while installing the Rollup and applying Microsoft security fixes. For general information about SSUs, see Servicing stack updates and Servicing Stack Updates (SSU): Frequently Asked Questions.

If you use Windows Update, the latest SSU (KB5001403) will be offered to you automatically. To get the standalone package for the latest SSU, search for it in the Microsoft Update Catalog

REMINDER If you are using Security-only updates, you will also need to install all previous Security-only updates and the latest cumulative update for Internet Explorer (KB5006671).
